October is World Mission Month
World Mission Sunday is one special Sunday each year in October when we try to answer the invitation of Jesus to bring his word and love to the whole world. Every Christian is a Missionary by the vocation they received in Baptism and Confirmation.
So every year we are called to be missionaries in action, through our prayers, our contributions and our lives. We pray for those called to be missionaries in other countries and for ourselves that we deepen our own missionary spirit.
Over the years many young women and men answered God’s call by becoming brothers, sisters and priests. They left their own countries and went to share God’s love. Many gave their lives (26 missionaries were killed in 2011, during their ministry). Many live in difficult, dangerous, remote and impoverished places. Why do they do this? Because they feel they are called in love to share this joy with others. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations… teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” Matt. 28: 19, 20
On Mission Sunday every parish is required to have a special collection for missionary activity throughout the world. In this way we share our faith and reach out to people in need. Please contribute generously – every gift makes a difference to the donor as well as to the beneficiary.
