The Youth Commission has entered into contact with Fr Ted Rodgers with a view to peer education according to the Behaviour Change model. Other models are Fleet of Hope and Future Islands.

Objectives

1) To give young people awareness of life sustaining behaviour and the insight required to act on the need to change.

2) To offer support to young people by ongoing interaction with the group, and if required with individuals in need of support.

3) To recruit youth:
To be role models in the group and communities from which they come, who show a willingness and ability to live by action and word the ABC’s of the project to become trained as peer leaders.

4) Continual assessment of the program is required of this new group to allow improvements to be made, and by facing the challenges of change to give a message in tune with the problems of the times while not buying into them.

Overview

This program is designed for young people and will be delivered by young people, allowing sensitivity to the pressures and needs of young lives.

The content, which the group has covered, over three intensive weekend training sessions will allow flexibility to deal with a large number of relevant topics relating to teenagers and sexual behaviour. The group has also been instructed with skills and techniques most effective at communicating the necessary information and decision-making skills required by teenagers.

Faith, hope and love are the underlying gospel values by which the group aims to operate, and thus an idealised lifestyle will not be presented and dictated by the group. Rather, as young people passionate about life, through action and word behaviour, which is healthy in body, mind and spirit will be encouraged and the ultimate decision rests with the choices of each young person.

The program can be run in English or Zulu, and thus any interest in contacting this group with the intention of delivering a program at youth level, whether a church group or not, should make specific reference to the age, size and situation in which the group is. These considerations are essential before a program can begin so as to determine the method and content most relevant to any specific group.
